You can make a huge difference to your child's learning by supporting them at home. Here are some simple ways to help:

• Read with your child every day and record this in their reading diary or BoomReader.
• Practise phonics regularly to build confidence with reading and spelling.
• Listen to your child read aloud and talk about the story by asking questions.
• Practise the weekly spellings a few minutes each day.
• Support maths at home by counting, recognising numbers, using money, telling the time and spotting shapes in everyday life.
• Encourage independence by letting your child organise their belongings, get dressed and take responsibility for simple tasks.
• Talk about their day and encourage them to share what they have been learning at school.
• Ensure your child attends school every day and arrives on time, ready to learn.

Saint Joseph, the Worker, is our class saint. He was a carpenter and is often depicted with either the tools of his trade to signify that he was a worker. Work is seen as something that brings dignity to the human person as it is the means 'of providing for his life and that of his family, and of serving the human community'. Therefore, Saint Joseph helps us to understand the importance of the dignity and rights of workers - that everyone's work should be safe and helpful to them because God made them - part of our Catholic Social Teaching.

At St Ambrose, we believe that every day counts. Good attendance helps children settle confidently into Year 1, build strong friendships and make the most of every learning opportunity.

Year 1 is an important year as children build on the foundations of Reception and become more independent learners. They develop key skills in reading, writing and mathematics while continuing to grow in confidence, resilience and curiosity. Regular attendance ensures children can fully access the curriculum and enjoy all the experiences Year 1 has to offer. We encourage all children to aim for 96% attendance or above.

Parents can support excellent attendance by:

• Ensuring children arrive on time each day, ready to learn.
• Establishing consistent bedtime and morning routines.
• Booking appointments outside school hours where possible.
• Taking holidays during school holiday periods.
• Informing the school promptly if their child is unwell.

Every day in school helps children grow, learn and thrive.

Reading is really important in Year One as we continue to progress with our phonics knowledge. Children are encouraged to read daily at home and record it on the Go read app. In class we read for pleasure in the book corner and have phonics sessions daily. We are also learning to read for meaning and answer questions about the books that we read.

In June, children will complete the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check, and we work closely with families throughout the year to ensure every child becomes a confident, fluent reader.
