Art and Design at St Ambrose: Inspiring Lifelong Artists and Designers

At Saint Ambrose, we want our children to develop a deep appreciation for creativity and artistic expression. Art and Design encourages pupils to explore different materials, techniques, and ideas, helping them to express themselves confidently and see the beauty and meaning in the world around them.

Intent, Implementation and Impact

Intent

At Saint Ambrose, our aim is to nurture confident, imaginative and expressive young artists. We want children to be inspired to create artwork that engages, challenges and reflects their individuality. Pupils are given opportunities to explore a wide range of materials and techniques, while also learning from the work of significant artists, designers and architects throughout history. Through this, they develop the skills, knowledge and self-belief needed to apply their learning across different topics and continually improve their creative abilities.

Implementation

Teachers use the National Curriculum as the foundation for planning, supported by Kapow Primary and the Emmaus scheme of work. Art is taught discretely but meaningful links are made with other subjects where appropriate to deepen understanding. We are continuing to embed the Art and Design scheme to ensure high-quality teaching, clear progression of skills and consistent assessment across the school.

Pupil interviews, including those with SEND, Most Able, EAL and Pupil Premium pupils, help us gain valuable insight into how children experience Art lessons. Their feedback informs how we adapt our curriculum, strengthen successful strategies and identify areas where additional support may be needed. Listening to pupil voice ensures our Art curriculum responds to the unique needs and interests of our children.

Art and Design in the Early Years (EYFS)

In the Early Years, children explore Expressive Arts through rich, daily opportunities to work with a variety of media, materials and tools. They experiment with colour, texture, design, form and function, learning how different elements can be combined to create new effects. Our carefully planned indoor and outdoor creative areas allow children to work on both small and large scales. Talk is central to this learning: pupils share their creations, describe their ideas and build confidence through purposeful communication.

Impact

Assessment is ongoing throughout the year and helps teachers plan next steps that appropriately support and challenge each child. Termly analysis of attainment identifies trends, strengths and areas for development so we can ensure every pupil makes good progress. As staff continue to develop their confidence and expertise in Art and Design, the subject’s profile strengthens across the school.

We are committed to ensuring that children not only develop age-appropriate artistic skills but also enjoy their learning. Pupil voice shows that our pupils feel proud of their progress, engaged in lessons and confident in their creative abilities. Our Art and Design curriculum equips them with the tools they need to express themselves, think creatively and appreciate the artistic world around them.

Yet you, Lord, are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.

Curriculum

Catholic Social Teaching

At Saint Ambrose, our Art and Design curriculum is closely connected to CAFOD’s Catholic Social Teaching across Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. Through creative projects, pupils learn to appreciate the dignity of every person by celebrating diverse cultures, images and stories from around the world. They explore God’s creation and the importance of caring for our common home by using natural materials, studying the beauty of the environment and creating artwork that reflects stewardship and gratitude. As children examine artists from different countries and backgrounds, they deepen their understanding of solidarity and the global family, recognising that we are all connected. In KS2, pupils build on these foundations by using art to express ideas about justice, peace and the common good, whether through posters, symbolism, environmental art, or responding to global issues highlighted by CAFOD. In this way, Art and Design becomes not only a creative subject, but a meaningful opportunity for pupils to reflect our Catholic mission and use their talents to make the world a fairer, kinder place.

Catholic School Pupil Profile

Art and Design encourages pupils to be curious and wise as they explore different materials, techniques, and artistic traditions, discovering how creativity helps us understand both ourselves and the world around us. Through studying artists from diverse cultures and time periods, children become attentive and discerning, noticing detail, pattern, and meaning within artwork. As they evaluate their own creations and those of others, pupils learn to be truthful and eloquent, expressing their ideas clearly and appreciating the value of honest, respectful critique.

Creating artwork inspired by global themes nurtures compassionate and loving attitudes, encouraging pupils to celebrate human dignity and recognise beauty in every person. Exploring themes of creation, community, and stewardship helps children to be faith-filled and hopeful, understanding how art can communicate messages of justice, peace, and care for our common home. Art and Design also develops intentional and active learners who experiment purposefully and reflect on their progress, and helps them become generous as they share resources, collaborate on projects, and appreciate the gifts and talents of others.

Enriching Art and Design

Graffiti Art

We were delighted to spend the day working with a professional graffiti artist, who helped inspire our pupils to think creatively and boldly. Each class was challenged to design a section of the playground wall that reflects the wonderful learning, values and experiences that make St Ambrose such a special school. The artwork proudly includes our mission statement, “We do our best by following Jesus,” and also celebrates Father Lamb’s remarkable 30 years of priesthood at St Ambrose Catholic Church.
