At Saint Ambrose, Religious Education is regarded as a core subject, integral to the ethos and daily life of our school community. It is not merely a subject but a way of life, where living and learning through Faith is paramount.
We implement the “Learning and Growing as the People of God” Strategy, the designated curriculum framework for Religious Education in Catholic Primary Schools within the Archdiocese of Birmingham. This comprehensive strategy equips our educators with a variety of cross-curricular activities, which can be tailored to meet the diverse learning needs of our pupils. Through this approach, students are encouraged to explore the Catholic faith deeply and achieve meaningful learning outcomes. A significant focus is placed on engaging with profound questions of life, guided by religious teachings.
The Strategy comprises twelve units per year group, encompassing four key areas of study:
The Liturgical Seasons of the Church’s Year: Pupils learn about the significance of each liturgical season, including its unique signs, symbols, and the various liturgies celebrated throughout the year.
Scripture: Students delve into both the Old and New Testament, fostering familiarity with Scripture and understanding how Catholic beliefs are deeply rooted in its teachings.
The Sacraments: Each year group maintains a strong sacramental emphasis, with Year 3 specifically preparing students for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist, and Year 6 for Confirmation.
Living as Christians, including Prayer: Pupils explore what it means to live as Christians today, learning about the Church’s structure from global to parish levels, and discovering opportunities for active participation in Church life.
Each unit includes dedicated time for prayer and reflection, encouraging pupils to engage with and contemplate the mysteries of God.
At Saint Ambrose, we believe that every individual is a unique creation, made in the image and likeness of God, endowed with special gifts to serve others. Our Catholic Religious Education curriculum is designed to foster respect and understanding of diverse faiths and religions.
Each year group engages with a different religion, enhancing their learning through multicultural and multi-faith celebration weeks, individual lessons on significant feast days, and focused mini-topic weeks determined by the teaching staff. Our pupils have the opportunity to visit various places of worship and welcome guest speakers from different faith backgrounds. These experiences encourage our students to reflect on the common values that unite us as people of faith, promoting a spirit of inclusivity and mutual respect within our school community.
