There are seven sacraments through which God can communicate His grace - his saving help- to an individual. At St Ambrose, our pupils receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation, First Holy Communion and Confirmation and these are signs of Jesus' presence in our lives.

We firmly believe that it is important for children of the Catholic faith to receive these sacraments in order to grow in their faith and to experience a greater relationship between themselves and our loving God.

Year 3

In Year 3, our pupils prepare for and receive the Sacrament of Reconcilation. This Sacrament focusses on the asking of God's mercy and forgiveness for the sins that they have committed. The confession of sins enables the children to be forgiven and reconcile themselves with God, his family and the Church. They are also given strength to stay close to Him and to resist sin in the future.

Children in Year 3 also prepare to receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion. This preparation takes place during R.E. lessons and also meetings between school, parents/carers, members of our parish (catechists) and our parish priest.

This sacrament focusses on the Eucharist which nourishes our life of faith. The Eucharist is the heart of the Church and it is Jesus Christ himself really present among us today to fill us with his own life - his Body and Blood. We receive the Eucharist in Mass, which is a renewal of Jesus' sacrifice on Calvary.

Year 6

In their last year at primary school, our Year 6 children receive the Sacrament of Confirmation, in which Jesus seals them with the Holy Spirit. They are joined more closely to Jesus and become a full member of His church.

They start their preparation during their R.E. lessons and there are also meetings between school, parents/carers and the parish priest. The aim is to give them a more adult understanding of the Faith in which they are going to be baptised and to see what being sealed by the Holy Spirit really means.

The Sacrament of Confirmation is adminstered every year and conferred through anointing with chrism and the laying on of hands.

The children are always extremely excited about encouraging all their family and friends to come join them in church on the night of their confirmation. This usually takes place on December 7th - the feast day of our patron saint, St Ambrose.
