The Teaching of Phonics

St Ambrose's follows the Read, Write, Inc. Phonics Scheme by Ruth Miskin

Phonics is recommended as the first strategy that children should be taught in helping them learn to read. Phonics runs alongside other teaching methods to help children develop vital reading skills and give them a real love of reading - hopefully for life.

Words are made up from small units of sound (phonemes) and phonics teaches children to listen carefully and identify the phonemes that make up each word. This helps them learn to read and spell words.

Synthetic phonics is simply the ability to convert a letter or letter group into sounds that are then blended together into a word. Then there are words known as 'tricky words'. These are words you need to remember by sight. Oscar the Orang u tan helps Reception class learn these with his tricky bananas.

Children in Key Stage One have daily phonic sessions, beginning with simple sounds building up to more complex ones to create fluent, enthusiastic readers, confident speakers and willing writers. We use the Read, Write, Inc. resources alongside Letters and Sounds. Children learn to read and write in a fun and engaging way.

Phonic packs are given out to Parents to support children at home.

Phonic workshops are also held throughout the year.

Children are taught to write in cursive style. Please see attachment below.
