Early Years (Reception)

Children in our Reception class follow Curriculum Guidance for The Early Years Foundation Stage (Sept 2012). There are 7 areas of learning and development:

The 3 Prime Areas are:

  • Communication & Language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal, Social, Emotional Development

In additions to these, there are a further 4 Specific Areas through which the Prime Areas are strengthened and applied.

The Specific Areas are:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

Key Stage 1 & 2

In Key Stage 1 & 2 children follow the National Curriculum. We use a cross curricular/ topic based approach to learning where possible, as we believe that the skills, which are learned in one curriculum area, can be applied in another.

The Core Subjects studied are: RE, English, Maths, Science.

The Foundation Subjects studied are: History, Geography, Computing, PE, Art, Design & Technology, Music and Modern Foreign Language (French).

PSHE is taught through P4C activities and Circle time discussion.

Reading in School

Our reading scheme comprises books from the Oxford Reading Tree, Rigby Star and Read Write Inc Schemes and the books are organised into coloured Book Bands. Children are assessed regularly and move onto the next Book Band when their fluency and understanding show that they are ready. Children move through the Book Bands until they reach the required standard to become a Free-Reader, choosing a book to read from the class library or from home.

We try to encourage a love of reading for pleasure through activities such as Reading Around the World and supporting events such as World Book Day.
