Message from Mrs Brocklesby

Welcome to this week’s newsletter! It’s been another busy and exciting week at Saint Ambrose, filled with learning, creativity, and achievement. Thank you to all families for your continued support.

As we move into next week, Year 6 will be taking their SATs. We want to reassure parents that this is a celebration of everyone’s hard work and progress throughout the year. The children have been well prepared, and we are incredibly proud of their effort, resilience, and positive attitude.

As part of our Catholic ethos, Liam Thomas, lay chaplain from Hagley, supported Reception to Year 5 classes in a prayer and liturgy session focused on the Month of Mary. Pupils reflected on Mary’s role as Mother of Jesus, spent time in quiet prayer, and took part reverently in liturgical worship, deepening their understanding of faith, reflection, and prayer.

During the month of May, each class is focusing on a special title of Our Lady as part of their prayer and devotion:

  • Nursery and Reception – Our Lady
  • Year One – Our Lady of Lourdes (St Bernadette)
  • Year Two – Our Lady of Guadalupe
  • Year Three – Our Lady of Knock
  • Year Four – Our Lady of Fatima
  • Year Five – Our Lady of Walsingham
  • Year Six – Titles for Our Lady

These devotions are helping pupils to deepen their understanding of Mary’s role in the life of the Church and to grow in prayer and reflection throughout the Month of Mary.

Our Reception Class children were fantastic in their first Class Assembly. They shared the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears with enthusiasm, using exciting, clear, loud voices and beaming smiles throughout. The singing was fabulous and helped to tell the story beautifully from start to finish.
A huge thank you to Miss Gawthorp, Mrs Richards and all the staff in Reception who supported the children with their performance, and to all the adults who came to enjoy the assembly with us and for your continued support at home.
This assembly truly showed the amazing growth and confidence the children have developed since their very first day back in September.

Regular school attendance is very important for every child, helping them grow in confidence, make friendships, and reach their full potential. Coming to school every day helps children build positive routines and ensures they do not miss important learning and fun experiences. Each day at school gives children the chance to learn new skills, take part in exciting activities, and feel part of the school community. Good attendance also helps children develop responsibility and independence from an early age. Being in school every day, ready to learn, gives every child the best opportunity to thrive and succeed.

Our Streak Week will run from Monday 18th May to Friday 22nd May. Children who achieve a full attendance streak throughout the week will enjoy a special reward at the end of the week! Every child who attends school every day will earn extra playtime and an ice lolly as a celebration of their excellent attendance and commitment to learning.

We are Chapman Opticians – we have a practice on Vicar Street in Kidderminster. We want to share our leaflet with you regarding short-sightedness in children.

It’s estimated that up to 20% of children have myopia (short-sightedness), which is increasing. For children who need them, prescription glasses can make a meaningful difference, helping them feel more engaged in lessons and more confident about taking part in class. Research also shows that when children have the vision support they need, wearing glasses can contribute positively to confidence, educational outcomes and overall mental wellbeing.

The attached leaflet includes the above, and highlights that:

  • Children under 16 years of age are entitled to a free NHS sight test
  • There are now advanced options available to help manage short-sightedness in children where appropriate
