Message from Mrs Laskey
This week, our children have been exploring what it truly means to keep themselves safe, both in school and beyond. Through discussions, stories, and hands‑on activities, they’ve been learning how to recognise safe and unsafe situations, how to make sensible choices, and how to seek help from trusted adults. The week has encouraged pupils to think confidently about their own wellbeing and to understand that keeping safe is something we all play a part in every day.
On Tuesday, as part of Safer Internet Day, the children joined Mr Holman in the hall to explore the importance of staying safe online, especially when using AI and other digital tools. Together, they shared helpful top tips for keeping themselves safe and discussed what to do if they come across strangers or inappropriate content online. The children also talked about who they can turn to for help and were reminded of the importance of speaking to a trusted adult whenever they feel unsure or worried.
Here is an update from each Class Teacher about the learning and activities taking place in their classrooms.
In Nursery, we have been learning how to keep ourselves safe and make sensible choices each day. The children practised staying close to a trusted adult, holding hands, and listening carefully when grownups gave instructions. We also talked about what to do if something doesn’t feel right, how to use our ‘big voices’ to speak up, and why it’s important not to go anywhere with someone we don’t know. (Mrs Haskew)
In Reception, the focus has been on using kind words and kind actions. The children explored how the things we say can make others feel happy, included and safe, and they practised being good friends by sharing, helping and listening to one another. They also learned about staying safe when using technology, including the importance of telling a grown‑up if something online worries them and using devices carefully and responsibly. (Miss Gawthorp)
This week in Year 1, we have been learning all about how to keep ourselves safe. The children talked about using kind hands and kind feet to help everyone feel happy and secure at school. We also explored how to stay safe when using devices, including asking a grown‑up before going online, being careful about what we click, and understanding that login details and passwords are private and should only ever be shared with trusted adults at home or school.
Our Safety Squad duties have continued in the classroom too. Each day, two children take on the important job of checking that the cloakroom is tidy and that chairs are tucked under, helping to keep our learning environment safe for everyone.
We are very proud of how responsibly Year 1 have been thinking about keeping themselves and others safe. Their enthusiasm and care have shone through all week. (Miss Brewer)
This week in Year 2, our children have been learning all about how to keep themselves safe. We welcomed the NSPCC into school, where they delivered an engaging workshop about staying safe and knowing who to talk to if something doesn’t feel right. As part of Safer Internet Day, pupils also explored how AI and voice assistants work. We learned that although these tools can be helpful, they are not real people and cannot replace trusted adults. Throughout all of our activities, children were encouraged to speak openly, ask questions, and build confidence in staying safe in their everyday lives.
This is what some Year 2 pupils said:
"If you think that something is wrong about what is happening to you then you can call the NSPCC"
"We learnt about buddy and now we know how to be safe"
"AI isn't a real person and they don't have feelings"
(Miss Crumpler)
Year 3 have loved exploring this year’s Children’s Mental Health Week theme, “This Is My Space.” The children shared the places where they feel safest, most relaxed, and most cared for, and it was wonderful to hear how unique everyone’s special space is.
We also focused on Online Safety throughout the week. Every child took part in the ‘hand challenge,’ where they identified five safe adults they could talk to if they ever had a worry, faced an online issue, or simply had something on their mind. The children impressed us by thinking of far more than five trusted adults, both in school and at home, showing just how many supportive people they have around them. (Miss Morgan)
In Year 4, we learned about how to stay safe online and what kinds of information are appropriate to share with friends, family, and the wider public. We played an online game that helped us spot unsafe situations, such as fake accounts and suspicious email addresses, and we practised how to report anything that doesn’t seem right. We also watched an NSPCC video that explained how to recognise when something online might not be safe. Afterwards, we had a class discussion about what we had learned and talked about how Childline supports children and helps keep them safe. (Miss Noble)
In Year 5, pupils took a deeper look at online safety. They discussed why it is important never to share passwords, how to behave responsibly online, and what to do if they witness or experience cyberbullying. The year group also welcomed a visit from the NSPCC, who reinforced the vital work of Childline and reminded pupils that support is always available for any child who feels unsafe or experiences abuse. (Mrs Poynter and Mr Pitt)
Year 6 spent additional time learning about the work of the NSPCC. They explored how the charity supports children and discussed the different types of abuse in an age‑appropriate way, as well as how to identify trusted adults both in and out of school. This session offered a valuable opportunity to reinforce the message that help and support are always available, and that no child should ever feel they have to face a worry alone. Year 6 also undertook and were awarded a Fantastic First Aider Certificate, the children learnt basic first aid, including CPR, the recovery position and how to tie and apply basic bandages. (Mr Holman)
Together, these activities have helped our pupils understand that keeping safe is something we all contribute to, through our actions, our choices and the way we look after one another.
During today’s assembly, the children were invited to reflect on our core school rules: Ready, Respectful and Safe. As we move into the next half term, the whole school will be adopting a new behaviour approach. This consistent framework is designed to support pupils in taking responsibility for the choices they make through a restorative approach.
Thank you to all parents and carers who met with their child’s Class Teacher this week. A second Parents’ Evening will take place on Wednesday 25th February, and we encourage those who have not yet booked an appointment to do so via Arbor. These meetings provide valuable time to discuss pupil progress, celebrate achievements, and consider next steps in learning.
Have a lovely half‑term break. Let’s hope the weather is a little kinder to us.
