Taking place annually at all Worcestershire Libraries,  The Summer Reading Challenge encourages children aged 4 to 11 to keep reading during the summer holidays.

Children’s reading can ‘dip’ during the long summer holidays if they don’t have regular access to books and encouragement to read for pleasure. The Summer Reading Challenge helps by regularly reaching over 700,000 children each year, motivating them to visit their local library and keep reading during the holidays, and in turn helping them to maintain or improve their reading skills and confidence.

The Summer Reading Challenge can:

  • help to prevent the summer reading ‘dip’ for pupils
  • ensure your pupils are ready for their return to school in the autumn
  • support the transition between year groups and key stages
  • improve language skills, especially for those for whom English is a second language

Each year the Summer Reading Challenge has a new theme. For 2024, The Reading Agency is teaming up with Create for 'Marvellous Makers' a creative arts themed Challenge that will encourage storytelling and creativity through the power of reading.

Find out more about 'Marvellous Makers' here.

Did you know that Worcestershire Library membership is FREE? You can sign up online or by visiting your local library (Kidderminster). Throughout the year, our libraries organise various events and activities. Discover what’s on by visiting our website and following our social media channels.

Message from Mrs Brocklesby

Can you believe it! At times it feels like this year has flown by and other times it seems like a lifetime ago since we welcomed the children back last September. So much has happened! We’ve all been on an exciting journey together that is slowly coming to a stop for the summer holidays. Thank you once again for all your support and kindness.

Next week we will wish all of our wonderful Year 6 all the luck in the world as they leave us next Friday. You’re all stars ready to shine. All we ask is that you pop back in to say hello before too long. Today was the first performance of their production. It was performed brilliantly and I was wowed by the singing, acting, dancing, costumes and props. I would like to thank Mrs Shevas, Mrs Joyner and Mrs Dunn for directing the production.

The community spirit at Saint Ambrose is a real strength and I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in planning and preparing the Fete.

Message from Mrs Laskey

Dear Parents and Carers

We have had such a busy week at school, and I cannot believe that the end of the academic year is fast approaching.  Year Four went to Ironbridge on Monday and had a fantastic day. Year Five headed on the train to Hagley to take part in the MAC Sports Event and had a brilliant afternoon. Year Six performed a dress rehearsal and their first of two performances of their end of year production and every class this week has been busy preparing their stall for the fete.

The School Summer Fete takes place after school and there has been a lot of hard work going on behind the scenes.  I’m sure it will be a great success and we look forward to sharing more information about this next week.

Yesterday you will have received your child’s annual report.  The report informs you of your child’s attainment and progress this year and the teacher's comment provides you with a more personalised insight into your child’s attitude towards learning, friendships and general attributes that your child displays.  An email was sent this morning with a link to confirm that your child’s report was received. Please can I ask that you acknowledge receipt of your child’s report via the link. Thank you.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend and I’m sure you’ll join me in wishing England’s Football Team the best of luck for Sunday's game – happy watching 😊.

Mrs Laskey

Regular attendance at school means that your child will make the most of their education and improve their chances later on in life. At St Ambrose, good attendance is of high importance and we strive to have at least 96% attendance. Please help us with this target. If you need any support, then school is here to help so that your child can get the very best out of the education we provide.

We will continue sending out regular push notifications about attendance so that you are aware if you child falls below our 96% target and we are working with Louise Howles, our Education Welfare Officer to support us with improvements.

YEAR 4 SCHOOL TRIP

On Monday, Year 4 went to the Enginuity Centre in Ironbridge.
We used our knowledge of electricity to make jitterbugs that ran off a single cell circuit. We impressed our group leader with our knowledge of circuits and how every jitterbug was able to move on its own!
We enjoyed exploring the museum that had a train we could move by turning a wheel by hand, there was a model dam that we could control and make sure we didn’t flood the villages as well as exploring how to make iron.

Matty- We even saw the actual iron bridge on the way home.

Gianna- I liked eating on the grass by the huge water fountain.

Jack- I liked exploring the wind power machine and I noticed that when I opened the window the power stopped.

We had a great day exploring a small part of the Ironbridge museums and will definitely go again!

YEAR 5 MAC SPORTS DAY

Boccia -  We made new friends while playing in a competitive sport.

Football - It was nice to play against football teams that included players we met at the Pyramid Concert.

Rounders -  I liked how each game was really competitive.

Tennis - It was great a hard game to play but everyone was really nice and supportive.

Trampolining - It was fun and something some of us had never done before.

Tri-Athletics - It was nice getting to meet other people who enjoyed the same sport as us.

The winners of the Olympic Colouring Competition are:

KS1

Emilia - Y2

Nellie - Y2

Adam YR

KS2

Solly - Y5

Franky P - Y5

Violet - Y4

We are so proud of Aurelia who has recently represented England in the Dance World Cup.

This is what her Mom has written about her amazing experience.

Team England finished top of the leaderboard and winners of the Dance World Cup 2024 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Aurelia and her team achieved some fantastic results. BRONZE and 3RD IN THE WORLD for their Mini Acro, 4TH for their Large Modern Jazz, 6TH for their Small Ballet, 6TH for their Large Ballet, 7TH for their other Acro routine, and 11TH for their Small Modern Jazz.
To qualify to be part of Team England was already a huge achievement, as thousands of dancers compete at their country qualifiers each year, and only those who qualify in the top four dances of their country for each age and genre are then selected to represent their country at the World Finals. They then went on the achieve some amazing results in Prague, competing in huge strong sections with 62 countries taking part. Aurelia’s highlight was winning a bronze medal 🥉 which she would love to bring in at some point, along with her certificates to show you all.

She has been so proud to represent her country and has made memories that will last a lifetime.

SUMMER WELLBEING NEWSLETTER

National College - Online Trolling

Trolling is the act of making inflammatory comments or behaving in an abusive manner online to hurt the feelings of others or provoke a reaction from them 😡 It is estimated that in 2022, over a third (34%) of people in the UK who suffered online abuse were specifically victims of trolling. The repercussions of this type of online abuse can be severe, which is why it is imperative that parents and educators have the tools to mitigate the risk of harm to children and young people.

In this week's guide, we offer expert insight into the act of online trolling and provide advice on how to protect children and young people if they encounter it themselves, helping them minimise the impact of this hurtful behaviour.

Please follow the link for more information on how to recognise and deal with online trolling.
