School Council

What is Children's School Council?

Children's School Council is a group of children who meet regularly to discuss issues within the school so that pupils have a voice and are involved in decisions about the school that affect them. They have special School Council badges so everyone knows who they are!

Why do we have a Children’s School Council?

  • To constantly improve our school according to the children's point of view.
  • To make sure each class has a platform to voice their opinions.
  • To discuss and raise issues with the aim of reaching a democratic solution.
  • How do children become a School Councillor?

At the beginning of each year, children can nominate themselves to be a school councillor. Nominees present to their class the reasons why they think they would be good in this role and what they would like to achieve. Each class then votes for their two councillors who will be in office for that academic year.

    What happens in the meetings?

Each year group's councillor meets with their class to discuss ideas about changes and improvements to the school. The issues are then raised in the meetings and councillors discuss how to move forward with these ideas. They carry out surveys and votes within their classes so that each class's opinion is represented. These opinions are then fed back to the council and the opinion of the majority is taken forward.

What things have our School Council achieved?

    • In 2020, our school house teams were renamed after the local saints: St Wulstan (red), St Nicholas Owen (blue), St Richard (green) and St Chad (yellow). Children across the school voiced that they felt these local saints would help lead them in our Catholic mission: we do our best by following Jesus.
    • They have discussed ideas to make lunchtimes even better and helped introduce rules to improve behaviour.
    • In order to raise money for different charities they have organised several non-uniform days.
    • They have been consulted and made sensible suggestions towards the school's marking and feedback policy.
    • During the Summer Term 2019, they highlighted that pupils would like astro-turf on the playground and so money raised by the PTA was put towards having this installed ready for 2019-2020.
